They left the tree and made their way back to
the golden wall. Starting at the west corner and working their way east, they caressed
the wall, carefully looking for cracks. Near the middle, they found some. As
they followed their figures around the cracks, they realized they seemed to
form a door.
“You
don’t suppose…” asked Princess Eva looking closely turning her head to Prince
Adam.
“Only
one way to find out,” said Prince Adam. Prince Adam pushed on the center
between the cracks in the wall. It started to move like a door on a center
pivot. The two royals, one head above the other, took a look to the left and
right inside the door but saw no one, only the wall of the court and the south
wall of the castle.
“There’s our answer, but let’s not
bother with it now. Let’s go play!”Prince Adam said as he gently pushed the
loose wall back into place.
“Let’s go chase
bunnies!”Princess Eva said excitement in her voice.
Rabbits
scattered everywhere as Princess Eva and Prince Adam chased them into their
hidden holes. Looking ahead Prince Adam saw the apple tree with branches just
low enough for a small child to climb.
On it were large perfect apples.
“Rabbits are
gone. Let’s climb that apple tree. I’m starving,” said Prince Adam already
running.
Princess Eva was
close behind and was up the tree nearly as quick as Adam. Each picked an apple
and started to eat. As they ate, they leaned against a branch so they could
grab more apples without moving. The sun shone brightly, and both were getting
very hot.
“Wish
we could go swimming, “Prince Adam grumbled as he threw his final core and climbed
back down the tree. As he reached the last limb, he jumped to the ground and
added, “I’m starting to sweat.”
“We can’t go
swimming in the sea,” said Princess Eva as she shimmied down the tree after
him. When she reached the ground she
added, “You know about the King’s decree.”
“Nothing
says we can’t sit by it,” Prince Adam said with a smile and headed toward the
sea.
Eva was right
behind as they walked down to the grass just before it turned to sand near the
water’s edge. They looked across the expanse of water, taking in the smell, the
sun, and the sky. A whisper on the wind seemed to be calling their names.
“Adam, Eva, come
see how nice my water is. It is so cool and clean. See how I shine in the
bright Northern sun light,” they heard a sweet voice say.
