“Did you hear
something?” Princess Eva asked looking around.
“Sure looks harmless to me,” said Prince Adam,
not hearing the question. He rose and walked closer to the shore and sat on the
sand. Princess Eva hesitated then came and sat beside him. The water looked so
cool and inviting. This time, both Prince Adam and Princess Eva heard the voice
in the sea,
“Adam, Eva,
don’t be afraid.”
Prince Adam
stood up. “I ain’t afraid of anythin’” said Prince Adam defiantly.
“What?” Princess
Eva asked.
“Someone
said I was afraid, and I’m not afraid of nothing.”
“Come
and cool off in my sweet, cool water,” the voice enticed.
Prince Adam felt
sweat run down his face. He brushed it away with the side of his shirt sleeve. Prince
Adam stood up, picked up a stone, and skipped it across the rippling sea
surface. Princess Eva did the same. Nothing happened, so they did it again and
again. The day grew warmer and Prince Adam, like most normal little boys, put
the warning out of his mind and looked at the water longingly.
“It sure
is hot! Surely it could not hurt to just wet our hot toes,” said Prince Adam.
“Isn’t
that entering the sea?” Princess Eva asked.
“It’s
just touching it,” Prince Adam reasoned.
Prince
Adam and Princess Eva pulled off their slippers and socks. Adam placed one toe
in the water. Then he pulled it out hurriedly. Princess Eva and Prince Adam
looked down close at the toe.
“I
don’t see anything different,” said Princess Eva. She put her toes in the
water. Eva gave a little gasp as Adam took her hand and pulled her in so both
of their feet were in the water up to their ankles. It felt cool and delicious.
They both looked down into the glassy water at their feet standing in the sand
below.
“No claws. Only
toes,” said Prince Adam.
“None here either”
Princess Eva replied, wiggling her toes.
“Let’s
try an arm,”
Princess Eva
started to get excited, “Why not?”
